A Soul

Posted on 15 March, 2012 at 21:05

In Scripture, the word “soul” or “souls” (found, collectively, over five hundred times) never refers to a prenatal baby or an unborn child. A soul always refers to someone who has already been born, for good reason. That born soul needs to be redeemed because it’s accountable to God. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that that child needs a second birth. In fact we all do. (John 3:1-7) Anyone old enough (Romans 5:13) to understand that they’ve sinned against a holy God needs to be saved.

Every verse in the Bible that mentions a soul—a living soul—or souls always refers to someone who has already been born. Here is just a small smattering of what I am saying. I encourage you to look them all up…

Genesis 12:5; 46:15; 46:18, 22, 25, 26, 27

Exodus 1:5; 12:4

Joshua 10:28, 30, 32, 35, 37, 39; 11:11

Jeremiah 44:7

Exodus 18:4

Acts 7:14; 27:37

I Peter 3:20

An unborn child should never be confused with a living soul. Furthermore; the distinctive essence of being unborn should never influence how someone treats that developing child, since it's incontrovertibly a human baby.
